What is Red Light therapy?
Red Light Therapy also called Photo biomodulation (PBM) or low-level light therapy (LLLT) is completely safe, natural and non-invasive. Red light therapy gives your cells the boost they need to perform at their best. Our bed emits red light from 633nm to the 660nm and near infrared light at the 810nm to 940nm which is the optimum for what is called the ‘therapeutic window’. Red and near infra-red wavelengths from a light therapy device stimulate mitochondria. Science has proven that these wavelengths of light cause your mitochondria to produce more energy (in the form of ATP). ATP (adenosine triphosphate) provides the fuel that each cell needs to carry out all of its functions, including regeneration and healing.
Is red light therapy harmful?
There are no known side effects to red light therapy. Red light won’t burn the skin or cause premature ageing of the skin. Red light therapy is non-toxic and non-invasive.
Can anyone use red light therapy?
Individuals who suffer from health conditions that may be exacerbated by Red Light or Infrared Light therapy should contact their GP before use. These conditions may be, but are not limited to:
Epilepsy
Infrared light therapy should be used with caution in individuals with epilepsy
Pregnancy/Lactating/Breast Feeding*
As there has been no clinical research with red light therapy treatments on pregnant or nursing subjects, do not use the device if pregnant or lactating before consulting with your healthcare provider.
Hyperthyroidism
Infrared light therapy should be avoided in individuals with hyperthyroidism in the neck and upper chest area.
Thyroid disorders
Individuals with thyroid gland disorders should consult with their doctor before using infrared light therapy, as some forms of therapy may induce high levels of iodine.
Certain Cancers
Infrared light therapy should not be used on areas affected by malignant cancers.
Heart Disease/Cardiac Arrhythmias; Pacemaker
Individuals with cardiovascular conditions, hypertension, or heart disease should consult with their doctor before using infrared light therapy.
Photosensitivity
Some medications can cause photosensitivity**, and individuals taking these medications should avoid infrared light therapy to prevent severe skin reactions. It is not recommended to use red light therapy of you are taking any photosensitising medication for example, lithium, melatonin, phenothiazine antipsychotics, and certain antibiotics also allergy medications, pain medications and medications use to treat infection. If you are unsure if your current medication will affect your therapy consult your healthcare provider before starting.
Genetic conditions of the eye
Infrared light therapy may not be suitable for individuals with certain eye conditions, such as diabetes-related retinal diseases.
Recent burns or wounds
Infrared light therapy should not be used on recently burned areas, as it may interfere with the healing process. Do not use if you have an open, fresh wound.
Light Sensitivity
There are very rare conditions in which someone may have a sensitivity to light. Conditions like solar urticaria can cause allergic reactions when the skin is exposed to sunlight or intense light within a particular wavelength, regardless of the source. Those who have previously experienced sensitivity to light or have any kind of reaction when using red light therapy should not use this form of treatment until they have been cleared to do so by their doctor.
Metal body implants
Infrared light therapy may be reflected by metal body implants, so individuals with such implants should consult with their doctor before using the therapy.
Fever or Infection
During fever and infection, the body temperature is elevated. There is a risk that the increased heat created by red light therapy may contribute to temperature elevation throughout the body. However, this risk is relatively benign, as it is unlikely that the heat created by red light therapy will significantly raise body temperature during a fever.
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system attacks connective tissue through the body. People with SLE may be more susceptible to damage from light, with a skin rash caused by sunlight being common with this condition. While SLE may increase the likelihood of skin sensitivity to light, red light therapy may not cause this problem and may help with symptoms of SLE. Those with SLE should discuss the risks and benefits of red light therapy with a doctor prior to using it and should start with low-intensity treatments until they know how they will respond to it.
Severe bleeding or Blood loss
Some research suggests that red light therapy may slow the body’s ability to stop bleeding. If you have any concerns, you should consult your healthcare provider before starting therapy.
Botox, breast implants and lasik
Users with a history of facial fillers and/ or Botox injections should consult their dermatologist prior to use.
Users with breast implants should consult their plastic surgeon prior to use.
Do not use the device during the healing period post Lasik eye surgery. Before resuming use, we recommend getting clearance from your doctor
If there is any pain or discomfort during the treatment it should be discontinued immediately. Seek medical advice before continuing with the therapy.
*This device has NOT been tested on pregnant or breast-feeding women and therefore the risk to the foetus, neonate or pregnant women is unknown.
* Pregnancy: While research shows that it is very unlikely that red light therapy negatively affects pregnancy, many sources consider it to be a contraindication to red light therapy. Red light therapy artificially alters the function of mitochondria in a way that is intended to improve their function. While this could be beneficial to a developing child, the effects are not fully understood

Can I use if I am on medication?
Always check with your GP before starting any treatment. Some medication can cause photo sensitivity.
Can I burn from red light therapy?
Red light therapy used very low levels of heat and does not hurt or burn the skin. It does not have any UV rays.
Can I overdo red light therapy?
Red Light therapy does not harm the skin or underlying tissue. Always follow the guidelines and instructions provided with the equipment.
What should I put on my skin before red light therapy?
Clean your skin with a gentle, non-drying cleanser before treatment to remove any mineral-based sunscreen or makeup containing zinc. Clean skin without any barriers such as makeup, lotions, or creams ensures that the maximum amount of light can penetrate the skin. This increases the efficacy of the treatment by allowing optimal light absorption by the cells.
After red light therapy, apply a gentle moisturiser if needed. The light can sometimes dry out your skin, so a good moisturiser will help keep your skin hydrated. Do you take your clothes off for red light therapy?
Red light can only be absorbed by your skin when fully exposed. You can wear clothes during your treatment but we would recommend just underwear or you can be nude. Any area that is desired to be treated needs to be exposed.
Do I need to wear eye protection?
You should wear eye protection during red light therapy. Free eye protection is provided.
Should I drink water after my red light therapy?
After your session, drink plenty of water this will help to flush your lymphatic system and rid your body of fat and toxins.
Can I have a UV tan or spray tan while I’m using red light therapy?
Yes, you can continue to tan or spray tan when you are using red light therapy. We would recommend having a red light therapy session before your UV tanning session. Some evidence suggests that improved circulation from red light could produce a better tan through increased oxidation of melanin, however there is currently no scientific evidence proving this.
How long is a red light therapy session and how often should I have a session?
We recommend to only use once per 24 hour period. Our red light therapy session are 15 minutes long. The recommended protocol for red light therapy is a minimum of 3 sessions per week and a maximum of 6 per week. We would recommend having at least one day off per week N.B. the key to red light therapy is consistency and we recommend you continue your treatment after your initial sessions to continue to see results.
What Are The Long Term Benefits?

Consistent weekly sessions are crucial to achieve and maintain these benefits, particularly for chronic issues and long-term improvements in skin health. How old do I need to be to go on a red light therapy bed?
At The Tanning Shop you need to be 16 to go on a red light therapy bed.
N.B. If you are lucky enough to look under 21, we will ask you for proof of age in store before we will allow you to use UV tanning equipment. Please don’t be offended if you are asked, this is for your safety. This would need to be photo ID in the form of a passport, driving license or PASS card and include a date of birth.

REFUND POLICY – ONLINE PURCHASES
Customers will have 14 days cooling off period from the day of their online purchase to request a refund. If no minutes have been used then the refund will be in full, if some sessions have been used then refund will be for the remaining sessions. Please note, if all sessions have been used then no refund will be available within the cooling off period.
Customers will be entitled to a refund if the below criteria and process has been followed:
Customer informs the business in writing that they wish to proceed with a refund via customerservices@tfgg.co.uk or Unit 6, Morton Park, Darlington DL1 4PG.
The refund request is within 14 days of purchasing the service online.
Please note that if the incorrect package is purchased online customers will have the option to exchange the minutes to a suitable package.
REFUNDS
Refunds are only available for medical reasons upon receipt of a valid medical certificate. All refund requests must be processed through our customer service team at customerservices@tfgg.co.uk, proof of purchase may be required to process a refund.

EXPIRATION OF SESSIONS, PACKAGES & MEMBERSHIPS
Please note that packages and sessions are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase. Memberships are valid for 31 days from the date of purchase.
We may be able to pause packages in exceptional circumstances which mean you are not able to use the entire package in the 12-month period.
We may also be able to pause memberships in exceptional circumstances. However, these requests must be sent in writing customerservices@tfgg.co.uk. Please note a Monthly Membership Bundle can only be paused twice. Evidence of these circumstances may be requested and this provision is at the discretion of The Tanning Shop.
This must be done via customer services at customerservices@tfgg.co.uk and is assessed on a case-by-case basis. You may be asked to provide supporting evidence such as a doctor’s note for us to do this. We reserve the right to refuse extension of packages or memberships.
REFER A FRIEND
This offer is available to all existing customers who refer a friend to the tanning shop. The ‘friend’ must be a new registration with us and must not have used our services previously. The £10 credit will be applied to your account after the ‘friend’ has had their first session. The £10 credit is only available to use against in store purchases.
